Are you looking for easy ways to keep cavities at bay? Here are my top three favorite things for you to do at home to help prevent cavities:

1. Drink more water – The best choice at meal time and in between is always water. It dilutes the acidic foods that we eat, and water helps to rinse the teeth.

2. Xylitol gum or candies – Xylitol gum has been shown in recent dental studies to significantly reduce the number of cavity-causing bacteria in the mouth. Dental studies suggest that three to five pieces of Xylitol gum per day can help provide the best results. Xylitol must be the first ingredient in the gum or candy.

3. Use a Sonicare toothbrush and floss daily – Instead of a manual toothbrush, I highly recommend Sonicare’s DiamondClean toothbrush. By following the manufacturer’s directions, patients have improved their oral hygiene significantly over those who use a manual brush. Additionally, nothing can clean between teeth as well as Glide dental floss. Floss picks do not allow for a complete cleaning of the surface between the teeth, so they are not my first choice; however, they are better than not flossing at all.
